Wow, the editor’s letters have been fantastic! I applaud the writers and the Star-Observer. To the people who criticized the editor for printing certain letters, I feel pity, and wonder why someone didn’t stop you from showing your complete ignorance to what it means to be an American. The fact that we can agree to disagree. Now we go on.

I may not like what you think or what you say, but I’ll fight to the death for your right to say it. All the letters were full of heart and vigor, just what started this country and what will see it through these dark days to come. Discussions of rights, religion and politics that were a joy to read and made you want to turn on the Dell and pen your own poison letter.

Makes me want to attack someone’s position on something. I know! Lady if you don’t want to obey the parking laws of this fair city then “hit the road, Jack.” That one trip a year when you shop in Hudson, the Downtown merchants will just have to tighten their belts and hope for a mild winter. What do you think was her point, she can’t tell time or the ticket blew the shopping budget. Either way that kind of element we don’t need — the next thing you know she’ll be spitting on sidewalks and crossing against the light.

Response to the religion letters are always special. Unless one has the ability of achieving blind faith, most religions are overflowing with hypocrisy. The Crusades, I have to kill you because you do not believe as I. Did these people ever read a Bible? The Vatican announced that it was pleased that the number of sexual abuse cases filed last year was only 4,700. Funny, I would have thought one to be too many. That’s another day and another time. For now we can sit back and watch Hill and Bama tear the Democratic Party into pieces so we can count hanging chads again. Whatever happens, I can’t wait until the Arabs run out of oil, all they’ll have left to squeeze the world with is sand and some Gucci sandals

Burberry buoyed by markets demand

Fashion group Burberry is to make a further push into emerging markets and cash-rich regions after strong demand for luxury goods from countries such as China and Russia helped annual profits rise by a quarter. Go to have Lunch!

The firm posted pre-tax profits of ￡195.7 million for the year to the end of March, with like-for-like sales up 8%.

Burberry - famous for its trademark check design - said wholesale revenue doubled from markets such as China, the Middle East and Russia, while North America underlying sales rose 26%.

The group revealed last month that it had become an unlikely beneficiary of the soaring cost of oil, with robust demand for luxury goods from oil-rich customers in oil-producing cities such as Houston and Dallas, as well as petro-dollar regions in the Middle East.

It is now planning to open another up to 10 stores in the United States and 15 to 20 stores in emerging markets to capitalise on the demand for luxury products.

Burberry also thanked new product designs and a push into accessories for the profits boost.

Accessory sales grew by 39% on an underlying basis, up from 28% in 2007. Sales of shoes more than doubled in the year, while handbags also sold well, said Burberry.

The firm is now planning a host of shoes, jewellery and childrenswear launches.

Wednesday’s figures defy wider gloom in the retail sector as consumers cut back on spending, but show the luxury market’s “robustness” in challenging times, according to Burberry chief executive Angela Ahrendts.

Last week Swiss luxury goods maker Richemont - the group behind Cartier watches and Piaget jewellery - also posted strong figures, with full-year profits up 18%. It’s so brilliantly beautiful!

TOKYO: Luxury goods makers are hoping to weather a consumption slowdown in the United States and Japan, their two biggest markets, with the help of shoppers in emerging economies and super-rich clients who do not feel the economic pinch. Industry experts have questioned how long fashion companies, yacht and sports car makers and other luxury goods makers can resist the wider consumption slump. I hope it’s so.

The very wealthy, after all, comprise a small group of people, and China, India and Russia are not yet spending enough to replace US shoppers. But chief executives at a luxury goods conference in Tokyo showed optimism, saying that sales were holding up. be further continued

“The luxury business has grown faster than the general economy and I think that trend is here to stay,” said Toni Belloni, managing director at LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group. So far, the evidence has been mixed. LVMH reported solid first-quarter revenues, but others have seen slower sales. Bulgari, the jeweller, saw sales rise 3% in the third quarter, while net profit was down.

Ermenegildo Zegna, chief executive of the eponymous Italian suit maker, said his company was expanding into sportswear and accessories and also into made-to-measure services for wealthy clients to woo new customers. “Despite the crisis, we have been able to sustain single-digit sales growth. We can still grow despite the slowdown of two of the most important luxury goods markets,” he told reporters at the conference. “The business model has to be changed. We are adding leather accessories, glasses, perfumes.”

Zegna is also the latest European fashion group to invest in a huge new flagship store in Tokyo. Armani, Bulgari and Gucci have already built glitzy retail towers in Ginza and Omotesando, Tokyo’s main luxury playgrounds. With sparkling facades, designer restaurants and spas, the shops attract luxury fans from all over Asia — most crucially, rich Chinese tourists who would rather shop in trendy Tokyo than in Beijing or Shanghai.

While Tokyo is turning into Asia’s most popular shopping centre, Japanese consumers themselves have become less enthusiastic. A tepid economy and an ageing population have led to the demise of the classic luxury goods consumer here: the “office lady” in her twenties who lives with her parents and spends a large portion of her income on luxury goods.

Economic data points to persistent weakness in Japanese consumption. Overall household spending in April fell 2.7% from a year earlier, a much bigger decline than expected. Rising grocery prices, stagnant wages and a stalling job market are hitting consumer sentiment. In the United States, consumer sentiment was likely stuck at a 28-year low in late May due to record gasoline prices and a deteriorating job market, a Reuters/University of Michigan poll showed on Friday.

Not that this matters to the most religious of luxury clients — the super-rich. While more accessible luxury goods brands such as Gucci are reporting flat sales in Japan, Italian fashion company Bottega Veneta, one of the most expensive labels around, saw sales rise 31% in the first quarter.

“Japan is a market that any intelligent luxury brand has to take into consideration,” Patrizio di Marco, president and chief executive of Bottega Veneta, said on the sidelines of the conference. “China is where Japan was 20 years ago.” Sorry,I must be go shopping.

Bottega Veneta’s signature woven leather bags and discreetly elegant clothes, without any visible logos, appeal to slightly older, more sophisticated wearers. Its success in recent years shows that there is still room for growth even in a mature market that has tried most of the luxury brands and yet care about status symbol. “You have to explain the story behind the product. The customer is hungry for information,” Marco said.

Other executives have also noticed stronger demand for their high-end, hand-crafted shoes and clothes and personalized products. Patti grateful as handbag contents returned

Entertainer Patti Newton has thanked police and the media after some of her jewellery - allegedly stolen from a shopping centre - was recovered.

Mrs Newton’s handbag, containing some valuable jewellery, was allegedly stolen while she was at a cafe in Chadstone shopping centre on May 16 with her daughter Lauren and grandson Sam. I will tell you in next time!

The items allegedly included rings, earrings, bracelets, a set of rosary beads her mother was holding when she died and an identification disc that belonged to her father.

Mrs Newton told reporters today she was “thrilled to bits” two bracelets had been recovered.

“You do get over things and I’ll get over these bits and missing things and I won’t not remember my mother because I haven’t got the rosary, but … it’s a possession that I treasured, that’s all,” she said.

Two people will face a Melbourne court today charged with the theft of the jewellery.

Police described their value as “substantial” and Mrs Newton said they were not insured.

Benjamin Thorpe, 32, and Rachael Ward, 34, have been charged with stealing Mrs Newton’s black leather Gucci handbag containing cash and jewellery worth $130,000 on May 16.

Their charge sheets reveal the contents of Mrs Newton handbag that contained a Gucci wallet, smaller Gucci bag, a Louis Vuitton coin purse, Louis Vuitton diary, a Louis Vuitton silver pen and more than $2300 cash.

The jewellery allegedly stolen included a gold and diamond wedding band; an 18ct heavy gold chain; three gold bangles, two encrusted with diamonds; four golden rings, two in the shape of flowers and one a snake; two pairs of diamond earrings; and a set of rosary beads.

Thorpe and Ward were also charged with possessing the proceeds of crime in relation to $235 cash and eight gift cards from JB Hi Fi, Target, Myer and Bed Bath and Table worth just under $600 in total.

The pair, both of Bluff Road, Hampton East, appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court and were remanded in custody to appear again tomorrow when both are expected to apply for bail. Sorry,I must go.

A Victoria Police spokesman said some of the jewellery had been recovered, and detectives are hopeful more may be located in the future.

Mrs Newton also thanked members of the public who had phoned in with information and said people could learn from her experience.

“I think people do need to make sure that they don’t carry a lot of things in their bag like I do, which I’ll never do again, and I think you have to keep it on your lap and make sure that, you know, you can see it and it’s in your eye’s view,” Mrs Newton told reporters. Just have a rest.

On Friday night my parents had a dinner party that Vlad and I attended. Of course all of my moms friends know that I am the ‘bag lady’ and many times they ask me what I think of their handbag. The same handbag-loving-friend of my mom who carried the Michael Kors Watchband Clutch to the last event we saw her at was again carrying a new stunner. As she walked in the house and greeted us, my eyes were drawn to her Prada bag and as I stared at the bag I instantly fell in love. She was carrying the Prada Stripes Multicolor Small Hobo in the turquoise-violet combination which looked divine and really was the perfect size. The small version adds the right amount of color splash and spunk, while not taking away from the overall outfit or look. The leather is supple Nappa, which is smooshy to the touch and perfect to showoff the colors. The top handle and shoulder strap are detachable, but I loved this being carried with the small top handle. Dimensions are 9½”W X 7″H X 3½”D. I first posted about the Prada Trembled Blossoms Bag and found it captivating yet pricey for the small size.

This is the handbag that keeps on giving. Apparently the designers at Fendi decided they were completely out of ideas and thought it would be genius to give you a blank bag to let you scribble all over it. And there you have the Fendi Artist Baguette, the do-it-yourself handbag that allows you to paint all over the white canvas with markers. Markers? Not even chic paints? No, of course not paints, not any material that would give an artist a way to possibly design a better bag than Fendi could come up with themselves. You know, I like this idea. The idea is great for the family that has so much money little Suzie would love to color on a designer purse for her 5th birthday. I got a coloring book for my 5th birthday, but little Suzie, the heiress to the post-it dynasty, would love a blank Fendi bag. I find it humorous that Fendi credits their success to three main factors- creativity, technology, and craftsmanship. Creativity, really? Oh ok I did not realize this blank white bag with markers is a creative idea. The only person left to be creative is the buyer, who already has to front over a thousand dollars for this bag. But this idea could be loved by our artistic-minded handbag lovers out there. The important thing is that I do not get one of these bags myself. The artistic gene skipped a generation when it comes to hands-on-arts-and-crafts, so unless I want to look like I am stuck in the 1st grade, I better steer clear of this handbag. Now we go on.

white bag brings, and thus would probably not wear a white bag for 6 months in a year. I am a messy person, and my bags get beat up sometimes. Think of your palest friend. I’ll bet she blushes and bruises brighter than anyone else you know. While that’s all well and cute, you don’t carry your pale friend on your arm. She is not a showcase of your personal style. I don’t want my bag to tell people that I’m a clumsy little girl who once in a while spills ketchup or drops her bag in the dirt (not that I do, but if I did, I’d want it to be on a darker bag). Nonetheless, every now and then, I see a very good argument for carrying a brilliant white bag. This Balenciaga Giant Hobo is one such argument. I realize that the appeal isn’t all in the color - the slouchy shape, the new gold hardware which looks terrible sometimes but really adds to this bag, the fun, slouchy shape, the sweet shortness of the top handle, the yummy, adorable, slouchy little shape - but I think this white is stunning on the hobo. I don’t think I would consider this bag for another month or two, but oof, I’ve been hit. The white just accentuates the squishy pliant looks of the leather. I want to put on a breezy red dress and take this bag on my shoulder and head to an outdoor cafe. Oh spring, hurry up already.
